Lithium-ion batteries have become the cornerstone of modern energy storage, powering everything from smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles (EVs) and large-scale renewable energy systems. Known for their high energy density, long cycle life, and relatively low self-discharge, lithium-ion technology has transformed how the world stores and uses electricity.
Overview and CompositionA lithium-ion battery typically consists of a positive electrode (cathode), a negative electrode (anode), a separator, and an electrolyte. During charging and discharging, lithium ions move between the cathode and anode through the electrolyte, generating electrical energy. Common cathode materials include lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO₂), lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄), and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC), while graphite is the most widely used anode material.
